Fresh, Bubbling Spring - The One Year Sweet and Simple Moments with God Devotional
Fresh, Bubbling Spring
Those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.
John 4:14
Over the years, I’ve learned the benefits of drinking water. Not only does it decrease my appetite, it keeps me from being thirsty at the end of a long day. And it really does hydrate my dry skin, too. The only downside is that drinking sixty-four ounces of water daily is not an easy thing for me to do, but I’ll keep trying!
When it comes to Jesus, the Living Water, I’m not a sipper; I’m a guzzler, and I want to guzzle all day long! Jesus makes it clear to us in Scripture that when we receive Him, He will produce a fresh, bubbling spring in us.
The story in John 4:1-42 is one of my favorites. Jesus is weary and thirsty after journeying all day, and while His disciples go into town to buy food, He sits down at Jacob’s well. A woman comes to get water, and Jesus asks her for a drink. She is startled because she knows that a Jewish man normally wouldn’t talk to an outcast like her. But not so with Jesus. He knows everything about her, but He still offers Himself to her as the Living Water. The woman accepts Jesus’ gift, goes back to town, and tells everyone she meets what happened. Because of her testimony, many others believe and receive Jesus too.
Wow! I can’t imagine the excitement in town that day or the life changes that her newfound joy and salvation prompted in her.
The Lord loves us so! He is the only one who can keep our spirit fresh and bubbling with His life in us, regardless of how the world’s troubles threaten to dry us up and scorch our tender souls.
Doesn’t it sound more appealing to have a fresh spring in our hearts than a stagnant pool? Life often leaves us spiritually thirsty, but when we are hydrated by Him, we can thrive even in desert situations. When we drink daily from our Living Water supply, hearing His voice above all others, we can pour out His freshness to a thirsty world.
Fresh and bubbling? Life-quenching? I’ll take it! Won’t you?
