Mirror, Mirror on the Wall . . .
Bible Blast: Read James 1:19-25
If you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. James 1:23-24
Imagine that there was a church where all the people were on their knees. They all scooted to church on their knees, and the pastor was on his knees as he began to speak to them. He said, “Church, I’ve discovered something amazing! I have legs!” And he very shakily stood up on his feet and showed everyone how he could walk on legs. The people were absolutely shocked at the sight of their pastor standing up so tall. The pastor said, “And you have legs too! Come on! Try to stand up!” The people were scared and nervous, but they helped each other stand up and were very happy to discover that they had legs. They jumped up and down and danced around on their new legs. The pastor then prayed, “Dear God, thank you for our legs! Help us use our legs every day to serve you. Amen.” The people all said, “Amen,” and began to walk out of the church waving good-bye to the pastor. But as they left, one by one, they dropped back down on their knees again and scooted out while the pastor shook his head in disbelief and frustration.
The focus verse for today says that people who read God’s Word and don’t obey what it teaches are just like a girl who looks in a mirror and then forgets what she looks like. Or maybe the girl learns from the Bible that God wants her to do something, and she gets excited about it and tells other people about it but never actually does it—just like the people in that church who wouldn’t keep using their legs.
If God tells you something, it’s a good thing. His guidance and direction are meant to change your life. His Word is meant to make you more like him, to cause you to fall more in love with him. One thing that makes a woman strong is when she knows God’s Word and does what it says. She doesn’t forget who she is, but she pays attention to God’s truth.
Girl Gab: Daughter, get up right now and go look in a mirror for two seconds, then come back. Go ahead. Now, tell your mom what you look like. Tell her what color your hair is and whether it’s rumpled or neat. Tell her the color of your eyes and if they look happy or sad today. Describe how you look right now. Wouldn’t it be silly if you glanced in the mirror and then totally forgot what you look like? Let’s promise not to be like that when we “glance” at God’s Word.
