Language Lab: What Is “The Great Commission”?

Bible Blast: Read Matthew 28:16-20

Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

Matthew 28:19-20

When I was about your age, my mom often handed me a big, round, light blue glass bowl. Then she would say, “Go pick some of Grandma’s strawberries for me, so I can make strawberry shortcake.” Oh, I loved that job! I loved going to Grandma Barker’s strawberry patch for my mom. Basically, when my mom assigned me to pick strawberries, she was giving me a commission. A commission is something we’re told to do.

After Jesus was crucified and rose from the dead, he saw his disciples one last time on earth and gave them the great commission. We read about it in Matthew 28:18-20. He told them to go everywhere they could and teach people about him and make sure the new believers got baptized.

The great commission isn’t just about missionaries going to another country. The great commission is for every Christian, in every place. So it is your commission too. When Jesus said “make disciples of all nations,” that included potential disciples in your neighborhood, school, and family. Everywhere you go, there are people who need to learn the truth about salvation through Jesus. You can fulfill the great commission, no matter where you are or who you are.

Make a list of three people you would like to see become disciples of Jesus Christ:

1.

2.

3.

Girl Gab: Take time to pray for each person on your list. Over the next few weeks, remind each other to pray for these three friends and encourage one another as you watch for opportunities to share Jesus’ love with them.
