Read Proverbs 17

A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered.

Proverbs 17:27

Much can be said with few words. A picture may express a thousand words, and a wise proverb leads to a thousand applications.

A wise person chooses his or her words carefully, and uses no more of them than necessary. As other proverbs clearly remind us, the degree of foolishness usually keeps pace with the number of words we use. The greater the quantity of words, the less likely we are to find quality.

The person with understanding can be even-tempered because he or she knows more than the immediate circumstance. Uneven temper comes from being too influenced by the moment. Even-temperedness doesn’t mean that the person approaches everything the same way; rather it means that the person has an understanding that directs him to respond to each situation with the appropriate temper (response). When Jesus was angry, he was displaying a profound reaction to the dishonoring of God’s house. We would do well to seek to become even-tempered people of few words!
