Healthy Fear - The One Year Daily Wisdom

Healthy Fear

Read Proverbs 9

Fear of the LORD is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.

Proverbs 9:10

Most of us are familiar with John 3:16, “For God loved the world so much . . .” He loved us so much that he provided a way out of our sin through the death of Jesus Christ. So what does it mean to “fear” him? This does not mean that he is “out to get us.”

However, stopping to contemplate the personhood of God should put us in complete awe. God created everything. He made this world. He put the planets in motion. He designed the universe. Shouldn’t we fear someone with that much power? It’s beyond the scope of our imagination to even begin to think about who God is. He is beyond definition. Even a label of omnipotent seems somehow limiting for the one who invented power. Omniscient is a joke for the one who made thought, language, and words. Our God is a mighty God. He isn’t an old man with a long beard; he isn’t the best of several other gods. He is the only God.

God is not only the foundation of wisdom, he is the foundation of everything. God is worthy of our utmost awe and worship.

A WORD FOR TODAY

Knowing God includes the right kind of fear.

Today, Lord, give me a glimpse of who you are and what you can do in my life. Help me to fear you more, so that I might come into a deeper relationship with you.
