Read Proverbs 7
Come, let’s drink our fill of love until morning. Let’s enjoy each other’s caresses, for my husband is not home. He’s away on a long trip.
Proverbs 7:18-19
When no one is around and, seemingly, no one will find out, it is very hard to resist the temptations of this world. A little lie here, a furtive glance there, a curse uttered in anger. These transgressions seem small and insignificant at the time, but they are sin nonetheless.
In these cases Satan scores a double victory. Not only are we doing something that goes against God’s will, but we are doing so because we don’t think anyone is around. At that moment, we have accepted the bold-faced lie that we can get away with something because “no one is watching.” And that, perhaps, is the greater problem, for it means we have forgotten that God is with us always. No one else may see you, but God does, and your sin breaks his heart. It is a lie from Satan that we can enjoy sin while no one is around, while the coast is clear. It ignores God’s high standards for us and, worst of all, it ignores God’s presence in our lives.
A WORD FOR TODAY
Secrecy is a false excuse.
Today, Lord, remind me of your wonderful presence in my life. Help me to remember that you are with me always and that I can turn to you for strength when I feel weak.
