Driven by the Wind

IN WORD The wind and the Spirit of God are a lot alike. Both Greek and Hebrew use one word for both meanings. Jesus, too, emphasizes the similarity. But what does this mean for the believer? What is it like to be blown by the wind of God?
Undiscerning eyes do not understand the way of the Spirit. The unspiritual mind does not see the reasons for God’s movements in the lives of His people. The world stresses human wisdom, common sense, “risk management,” and setting oneself up for success. It understands principles of ambition in careers, retaliation in relationships, pride in achievements, and carpe diem—seizing the pleasure of the day—as a way of life. It holds in contempt those who do not value worldly treasures. And it cannot comprehend the motivations and decisions of citizens of God’s kingdom who are propelled by the eternal Spirit. Kingdom values are a mystery to those who have fixed their gaze on this world.
IN DEED Is your life driven by the Spirit? Not if it is predictable and reasonable. Not if the unbelieving world can explain it. There is considerable contrast between the ways of the flesh and the ways of the Spirit. Read of the believers in Acts or of the faithful in Hebrews 11. There is an eternal wisdom behind the values Jesus preached. There is a heavenly city being built for those who shed their earthly ambitions.
Beware of a way of life that is acceptable to conventional human reasoning. The mind of sinful humanity neglects the eternal for the temporal and the holy for the profane. Its followers, therefore, give tainted advice. Do not follow it. Live a supernatural life under supernatural guidance. Be blown by God’s Spirit. He blows wherever He pleases and takes us where the world cannot go.
