She Senses Her Worth - Know Your Worth

“She senses the worth of her work…” Proverbs 31:18 (MSG)

When I was a little girl, I used to dream of being an adult. I couldn’t wait to rush my way through school, and get a job, and have a home and children and whatever else grown-ups were entitled to. My eight-year-old mind had a vision of what life would be like and I could hardly wait to experience it.

But jump forward a couple of decades and adulthood feels a little less glamorous and a lot more mundane. It’s filled with swim practices, and sinks full of dishes, and more mountains of laundry than I can tame. Unexpected seasons to walk through. Heartache at times. Responsibilities. Bills.

Don’t get me wrong, I truly love my life. I’m grateful every single day. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get bogged down by the mundane and messy parts of this beautiful life at times. I get restless and want to chase after big, new, shiny dreams. I want to accomplish things and make my life count. I want to feel significant. And sometimes, I just want to be seen.

A few months ago as I was washing what felt like the billionth sink of dishes, I remembered the woman described in Proverbs 31. The passage begins by describing this woman as “good” and declares that her worth is far more than diamonds. Right out of the gate, it’s settled. She is good, and her worth is irreplaceable.

The chapter then goes on to list all the things this woman does, from running a business to caring for her family, to sewing clothes–it’s kind of exhausting to think about! But as I thumbed through this text that day, I noticed something.

Verse 18 in The Message translation says, “she senses the worth of her work.” It’s one little line in a long list of not-so-exciting things, but it screams significance. Nowhere in the chapter does it say, “her Bible study group makes her significant” or her social media followers. Or that big, audacious dream she’s after. She senses the worth of her own work. What work? All the various things that she puts her hands and heart to. Every aspect of her normal, daily life is significant.

As you go throughout today, remember the worth of your work. Your worth and value do not come from the validation of others, or from your accomplishments, or even from how well you live your life. Your worth is in Christ. And all the things you put your hands and heart to hold value. Your worth is far greater than the most precious treasure!
