Go Empty To Be Filled By God

Lord, what Bible stories show us reasons to fast?

Jehoshaphat begged me for guidance. He also ordered everyone in Judah to begin fasting. So people from all the towns of Judah came to Jerusalem to seek my help. This is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help. The people of Nineveh believed my message, and from the greatest to the least, they declared a fast to show their sorrow.

2 Chronicles 20:3-4; Isaiah 58:6-7; Jonah 3:5

How should I prepare to fast?

When you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. That is the only reward they will ever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except for me. I know what you do in private. I see everything, and I will reward you.

Matthew 6:16-18

What can I pray to prepare my heart for fasting?

I am counting on you, LORD; yes, I am counting on you. I have put my hope in your word. I long for you, Lord, more than sentries long for the dawn. I want to know you and experience the mighty power that raised Christ from the dead.

Psalm 130:5-6; Philippians 3:10

Have you ever fasted as a spiritual exercise? Fasting is abstaining from food to gain a greater awareness of God’s power and presence in your life. There is something about going without food that clears your mind to better focus on God. Ask the Lord if a fast is right for you. Start small by fasting for one or two meals. Use your hunger pangs as a reminder to pray.
