Proverbs 4:23 THE OLD TESTAMENT law commanded God’s people not to commit adultery. But Jesus took it one step further by saying that if we even look at someone lustfully, we have already committed adultery in our hearts. Temptation begins with the eyes and travels quickly to the heart. If we let our eyes linger where they shouldn’t be looking, our minds will find ways to justify our gaze, and our hearts will start tugging us in that direction. Lust is not a sin that only men struggle with. Both the physical and emotional aspects of lust can tempt women as well. Don’t underestimate the power of sin. God’s Word sternly warns us to flee from all sexual sin, including lustful passion. We avoid temptation by taking our eyes off that which is tempting as a way to guard our hearts. The Bible says that the heart is “deceitful” (Jeremiah 17:9). Therefore, as sinful people, we can’t trust our emotions to tell us what is right and good. Trust God’s Word, for it comes from God’s heart, which is good and perfect. Lord, the temptation I need to flee from is . . .
