A prayer for Courage
When I need to face my greatest fears
My Lord and my God,
Over the centuries your church has been constantly threatened with persecution. Those strong in their faith did not pray for the threats to be taken away but for the courage to face them. I know that you are powerful enough to take away the things that frighten me. But I also know that more often you would rather give me the boldness to turn my fears into opportunities for spiritual growth and for helping others. Oh, how I wish you would take away my troubles. But when you don’t, grant me the courage to face them head-on and the confidence to know that when you help me through them, I will be a mightier spiritual warrior, better equipped to live boldly for you. After all, if you took away everything that frightened me, there would be no need for hope. And it is hope that helps me see beyond my immediate crisis and place my current fears, as well as my eternal future, in your hands. My hope is not in protecting myself, but in becoming more like you. Yes, Lord, may I desire courage more than comfort.
