A prayer about Love For Enemies

When I interact with those who stand against me

JESUS,

Today I was reflecting on your statement about loving enemies. I don’t have any “sworn enemies,” people who are out to get me, such as an opposing army with weapons. And I’ve never encountered severe persecution similar to what your disciples encountered. I do, however, have opponents, adversaries, and rivals—people who continually stand against me, seeming to oppose everything I say and do. Some criticize me publicly and gossip behind my back. I have heard about people who have been terribly wronged, even harmed physically, who then forgave those who hurt them. And I’ve read about persecuted Christians who have forgiven their captors and torturers. I don’t know how they do it, Lord, because I seem to respond with only dislike and hatred for my enemies. I know that’s not your way. And I remember your cry from the cross, asking your Father to forgive those who were crucifying you. So right now I pray for these personal aggravating enemies: I ask that you bless them. And please help me respond to their taunts and insults with love.

You have heard the law that says, “Love your neighbor” and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! Matthew 5:43-44
