My Lord And My God - Who is Jesus?
My Lord and My God
ὁ κύριός μου καὶ ὁ θεός μου
“‘My Lord and my God!’ Thomas exclaimed.” (John 20:28, NLT)
“I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.” (Exodus 20:2, NLT)
“On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords.” (Revelation 19:16, NLT)
What emotions do you think the disciples felt after Jesus’ crucifixion? What questions lingered? Perhaps they wondered if the Romans were coming for them next. Maybe they feared for their families’ safety. There may have been discussions among them that included this question: “Were we wrong about Jesus?”
As the apostles huddled together, contemplating their uncertain future, the sudden appearance of Jesus in front of them must have been terrifying. Once shrouded in doubt, Thomas reacted with awe-struck belief and blurted out, “My Lord and my God!” Every word in Thomas’s statement carries significance.
By calling Jesus “God,” Thomas acknowledged that the creator of the universe stood before him and that everything was happening according to the divine plan. And by addressing him as “Lord,” Thomas acknowledged Jesus not as a powerful, distant deity but as an intimate master. Thomas responded to Jesus’ sacrificial love with a renewed sense of loyal dedication. And by using the possessive pronoun “my,” Thomas declared that these names and attributes of Jesus were now part of his personal narrative. Thomas committed himself to the worship of Jesus and dedicated the rest of his life to following the will and plan of God.
Adopting Thomas’s outlook could also be transformative for us. Jesus is not a distant creator or the master of others—he is the one who created us, establishes our steps, and invites us to follow him as our master.
What small ways can you show that Jesus is Lord of your life today?
