God Does What He Says - The One Year Sweet and Simple Moments with God Devotional

God Does What He Says

There was always enough flour and olive oil left in the containers, just as the LORD had promised through Elijah.

1 Kings 17:16

In this wonderful story from 1 Kings, God blesses a poor widow because she is obedient. She becomes a firsthand witness of how God keeps His promise to His people. The prophet Elijah is hungry and asks this widow to share her pitiful portion of oil and flour with him. It is all she has to feed herself and her son, but she is willing to give up their last meal. God honors her faithfulness and provides a never-ending supply of oil and flour thereafter. In the same way, God is trustworthy to keep His promises to us today.

I’m sure most of us have been in a situation where we said we were going to do something but did not do it. We may have had the best intentions, but either we ran out of resources or we got distracted and ended up not keeping our word. In everything, I want to be a woman of my word and a woman of His Word, but the reality is that I don’t always get it right. God can always be trusted to follow through on His promises. He never gets distracted and never runs out of resources. He can be counted on to keep His Word to us.

I like to imagine how the poor widow’s faith grew more each day as she saw God providing for her and her son. He wants to build our faith, too, provision by provision, as we pay attention to His working in our lives.

Let’s nibble on this great truth today and trust God to keep all His promises to us. Stop by a bakery to pick up your favorite rolls or cookies, or bake them yourself with the flour of your choice. As you share and deliver them to someone who could use some “sweet bread,” thank God for His faithful sustenance and that He always delivers on every promise.
