Experiencing God's Presence #166

Do not rebel against the LORD, and don’t be afraid of the people of the land. They are only helpless prey to us! They have no protection, but the LORD is with us! Don’t be afraid of them!

Numbers 14:9

It’s not exactly comforting that Scripture sometimes portrays fear as a form of rebellion against God, but it does. In light of God’s overwhelming promise and clear favor on Israel, Caleb and Joshua saw the people’s terror as defiance against His plans. When God speaks victory and our fears speak defeat, we have a choice of which to believe. One of those choices is the kind of faith that pleases Him; the other is mutiny.

Fear quenches our sense of God’s Presence in our lives. Why? Because it doesn’t reflect the attitude of heaven. It’s out of sync with who He is and what He has said. It turns our hearts into alien territory for Him. When we know the favor He has given us, hear the promises He has spoken, and see the calling He has put within us, our worries and anxieties form a contradiction to the divine agenda. Our hearts become a hostile environment for faith.

From ample scriptural assurances, we can hear what He says to us about our worries: “Do not fear. I see your future, and I know how present circumstances will turn out. In every possibility you worry about, I’m already there. I’m not incapable of bringing you into your destiny, and I’m not unwilling either. In fact, it’s My delight to direct and guard your every step. I love the statement you make about Me and My goodness when you believe. So let go of fear and embrace faith. You can trust Me.”

Lord, I believe. I struggle with trust, but I know who You are—that You are good and trustworthy. I place all my confidence in You and not in any negative possibility that might happen. I choose to trust You.
