When They Have It All

Read Proverbs 23

Don’t envy sinners, but always continue to fear the LORD.

Proverbs 23:17

It can be very difficult when we see “sinners” prospering—especially when they prosper well beyond us. We see blatantly dishonest people being rewarded for their dishonesty. People that we know are anti-Christian seem to be receiving God’s blessings. Many who are living in ways that are socially acceptable but sinful are gaining fame, wealth, and power. It’s difficult not to be envious as we try to please God and yet continue to struggle.

This proverb tells us not to envy them, but to continue to fear the Lord. The next verse tells us why: “You will be rewarded for this; your hope will not be disappointed” (Proverbs 23:18). No matter what happens in this life, we must continue to fear the Lord. He has promised to watch over and guide us in this life so that we accomplish exactly what he desires. And he has promised eternity in glory with him. It doesn’t get any better than that!

A WORD FOR TODAY

Fear the Lord every day, one day at a time.

Lord, show me how to continue to trust in you, even when doing so seems to put me at a standstill while everyone else moves ahead. Help me not to be envious of them. Show me the riches of your glory and my blessings in you so that I have the right perspective.
