Sacred Reservoir

Read Proverbs 5

Why spill the water of your springs in the streets, having sex with just anyone? You should reserve it for yourselves. Never share it with strangers.

Proverbs 5:16-17

Sexual purity is not a very popular topic of conversation today. In movies, television, and books, sex is portrayed as something that is “no big deal,” something we have a “right” to, whether or not we are married. Society seems blind to the rampant spread of sexually transmitted diseases and the epidemic of divorces. Immorality gets flaunted while virtue is held up for ridicule.

But God calls us to a higher standard. He created sex as something special that would happen within a marriage relationship only. God did not create it as something to be treated lightly, abused, or shared with strangers. When we have sex outside of marriage, for whatever reason, we are disobeying God, plain and simple.

In the powerful imagery of this proverb, those who derive life from the springs must guard them. Otherwise, they will become polluted and of no good to anyone.

A WORD FOR TODAY

Marriage means dedicated springs.

Today, Lord, help me to have the strength to resist the temptations of this world and to remain pure in your sight.
