Humble Pie
Read Proverbs 22
True humility and fear of the LORD lead to riches, honor, and long life.
Proverbs 22:4
God hates pride (21:4). He desires that we have “true humility.” Humility does not mean weakness; true humility is a proper understanding of oneself in relation to God and to others. It understands sin but knows that God loved us enough to die for us. Humility understands that we have a place in God’s plan, while we respect the place God has for others in his plan.
When we are humble and fear (respect) the Lord, God says this leads to “riches, honor, and long life.” We must remember that a proverb is a “life observation,” not necessarily a promise. Plenty of truly humble and reverent people have been poor, gone unnoticed, or died young. The proverb is saying that when people live this way, many times they receive these blessings simply because it is a smart way to live. We ought to strive to honor the Lord by how we live, regardless, for we will be pleasing him.
A WORD FOR TODAY
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of success.
Lord, help me to begin on the path toward true humility. Give me healthy self-esteem so that I can use my gifts for you, while always being aware that you gave me the gifts to use for your glory and to build up your kingdom.
