Day 5: Take A Walk - Praying & Going

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

It’s time to pray and go! Get up! Take a walk!

I’m serious. It’s time to take a walk in your neighborhood. Take about 20 minutes and walk slowly by several homes. As you walk slowly, pray for those who live in each of the homes (Keep your eyes open while you pray!).

You don’t have to go in the yard or knock on the door. Stay on the sidewalk and pray.

If you live in a more rural area or small town or if the weather is inclement, you might have to pray and drive. The principle is the same, though. You pray and go.

Before you go, ask God to give you the specific words to pray a brief prayer for those in each of the homes. At one home, you may pray for the physical health of the residents. At another home, you could pray for a healthy marriage. At yet another home, you might pray for the salvation of those who live there.

You will be amazed at how God leads you to pray. With each home, you could be praying something you never planned. You know God gave you the words to pray.

Some churches have members pray and go and leave door hangers to let the residents know they prayed for those in the home. In fact, I am a member of a church where different church members prayed for homes in various neighborhoods in the community. Most of the time, if it looked safe and appropriate, we left a door hanger letting the residents know we prayed for them.

The response was outstanding. Many visited our church. Others let us know through a prayer email address of other prayer requests they had. We were able to minister to many people who lived a short drive or walk from our church. In some cases, we were able to have gospel conversations with those who were not followers of Christ.

The Great Commission of Acts 1:8 was the last words of Christ on earth. He told us to be his witnesses wherever we go, wherever we are. His last words were important to him. They should likewise be important to us.

There are two key elements in witnessing. The first is that we share the gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit. That is one of the key reasons we pray. The second is that we go wherever God tells us. It might be to homes in our neighborhood. Or it might be to homes far away in another continent.

Take a walk. Take a walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. You will see him do great things through your obedience.
