A Good Leader Knows Who To Follow - In the Evening When I Rest

A Good Leader Knows Who To Follow

Jesus, what can I learn from you as a leader?

If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.

Luke 9:23-24

Jesus, what is the key to effective leadership?

Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even I, the Son of Man, came not to be served but to serve others and to give my life as a ransom for many. I do nothing on my own but say only what the Father taught me. And the one who sent me is with me—he has not deserted me. For I always do what pleases him.

Matthew 20:26-28; John 8:28-29

What should I pray for those I lead?

Who am I to lead the people? May integrity and honesty protect me, for I put my hope in you. Show me the right path, O LORD. I will pursue your commands, for you expand my understanding. God, may you be merciful and bless us. May your face smile with favor on us.

Exodus 3:11; Psalm 25:21; Psalm 25:4; Psalm 119:32; Psalm 67:1

Jesus surrendered his life to God his Father. He showed us that in the Kingdom of Heaven, the greatest leader is the one who serves others. Where do you have a leadership role? At work? At church? As a parent? What are the opportunities you have to follow Jesus’ model as a servant leader? Some examples might be: helping your children pick up their toys; encouraging those you lead to volunteer at a soup kitchen or local shelter; offering to take a project no one else wants in order to help your boss or company.
