Date Night - A Minute of Vision for Men

Date Night

Hall of Fame coach Tom Landry once said, “Today, you have 100 percent of your life left.” Whether you realize it or not, you have 100 percent of your marriage left as well. Some would argue with me on that point because they don’t believe their marriage will last another month.

But what if you lived as if you had 100 percent of your marriage left beginning today? What would you change about your part of the relationship? You see, every relationship is a two-way street, but you can control only how you carry yourself in the marriage. I want to challenge you to consider how you can play great special teams through special moments like date night. Date night is life giving to a marriage. It demonstrates to your spouse that she is a priority. It gives both of you a break from work, kids, and schedules that can easily get out of control. Date night is an opportunity to pursue your spouse again, inviting her to come away with you.

The Old Testament book Song of Songs is one of the most erotic love stories in literature. It is the story of lovers pursuing each other and inviting each other into an embrace. Many a man will stop pursuing his wife, and as a result, the intimacy of the marriage will be extinguished. Notice how the king pursues his wife in Song of Songs 2:10-12:

My lover said to me, “Rise up, my darling!

Come away with me, my fair one!

Look, the winter is past, and the rains are over and gone.

The flowers are springing up, the season of singing birds has come,

and the cooing of turtledoves fills the air.

There is wisdom in the invitation to “come away.” Set a date, and go enjoy the blessing of being together. Make it special, and ask God to renew you as a husband. Keep pursuing your wife, and remember that today, you have 100 percent of your marriage left.

My lover said to me, “Rise up, my darling! Come away with me, my fair one!”
