A Child Of God - Promises for God's Princesses

A Child of God

To all who believed [Jesus] and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.

John 1:12

You and every other baby born have both a father and a mother. Who your parents are determines what you look like, what talents you have, and more. You resemble your parents in many ways. Your voice may sound similar to your mother’s, and your hair and eyes may be the same color as hers. Or you may be tall like your dad and share his musical ability.

Did you know that you also resemble God? He created you in his image. That doesn’t mean he shares your red hair and freckles or brown skin and chocolate eyes. He’s not left or right handed. But even though you don’t look like him physically, you are like him in other ways. You have a spiritual nature. You can think and choose. You can create. You can act in godly ways. You can tell right from wrong.

God’s first children, Adam and Eve, were also made in his image, but they disobeyed his rules. Ever since then every person is born with a sinful nature. It’s easier for us to choose to do wrong. God knew that would happen, and he had a plan ready. He sent his Son, Jesus, to live a sinless life here on earth and then die on the cross to pay the penalty for sin. But that’s not all. Jesus came back to life and defeated sin and death.

Because of what Jesus did, you can have a place in God’s family. If you believe that Jesus died for you and ask him to take away the bad things in your heart, you become a child of God. As you choose to follow him daily, you look more and more like him. Each morning, ask God to show you what he wants you to do for him that day. He’ll show you who needs a kind word or a helping hand. He will lead you in making right choices and choosing to overcome the temptation to do wrong. He’ll give you the desire to please him. And he will help you live victoriously as a daughter of God and child of the King.

List ways that you are like your family. Do you look like your mom? Do you share your dad’s talents? Do you have the same interests as your siblings? The same favorite foods? Next, list ways you are like your heavenly Father. What characteristics do you share with him? See Galatians 5:22-23 if you need some ideas.
