Fear Of God - 365 Questions for a Woman's Soul

fear of God - What does it mean to fear God?

Doesn’t his majesty terrify you? Doesn’t your fear of him overwhelm you?

Job 13:11

Let the whole world fear the LORD, and let everyone stand in awe of him.

Psalm 33:8

How joyful are those who fear the LORD—all who follow his ways!

Psalm 128:1

Fear of the LORD is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.

Proverbs 9:10

Serve the LORD with reverent fear, and rejoice with trembling.

Psalm 2:11

FEARING GOD is not the same as being afraid of God. Being afraid of someone drives us away from that person, while fearing God means being awed by his power and goodness. This draws us closer to him and to the blessings he gives. Fearing God is similar to having respect for a beloved teacher, coach, parent, or mentor who motivates us to do our best and avoid doing anything that would offend him or her. Because God is so great and mighty, and because he holds the power of life and death in his hands, we can have a reverent awe of him. A healthy fear of God recognizes what he could do if he gave us what we deserved, but then is grateful for the mercy and forgiveness he shares instead.
