A prayer about Loss

When I have lost someone I love

Compassionate God,

I have lost someone I love, and I am overcome with grief. But one thing that brings me comfort is the example, recorded in your Word, of Jesus weeping over the death of Lazarus. Even though he knew that Lazarus would shortly be raised from the dead, Jesus still grieved over the terrible separation that death brings. It tears apart families and friends, and even though the fabric of our lives will heal, our lives will never be the same. Thank you for showing me that it’s okay to grieve, to express the pain I’m feeling. Give me the patience to move through the process as slowly as I need to. And may I always remember that I grieve with hope, as one who knows you. I have the assurance of your love and the hope of eternal life. I praise you for the comforting promise that one day I will be with you in heaven, where all grief will be gone forever.

“Where have you put [Lazarus]?” [Jesus] asked them. They told him, “Lord, come and see.” Then Jesus wept. The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” John 11:34-36
